The Biabou woman who was set afire in her bed, reportedly after she refused to have sex or give money to her lover, has died.
Monique Clarke, a 44-year-old mother of two, died Tuesday morning at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, where she has been warded since the Aug. 13 incident.
She had suffered second- and third-degree burns to 85 per cent of her body — from her head to her lower extremities.
Clarke died as her sister, Iesha Richardson, and others were attempting to raise funds to send her overseas for medical attention.
Richardson announced her sister’s death in a series of post on Facebook Tuesday morning.
“Thanks everyone who tried to help in one way or another but Sad News… not what I wanted to hear… My sister Monique has passed on,” she said in one post early Tuesday morning.
On Monday, she used the social networking website to urge persons to donate to helping her sister receive specialist medical attention overseas.
“I know about the economic hardships gobally, But please help share the info please … we never know who’s next. It’s really difficult and frustrating … Time is running out and my sister has a good chance of survival if she gets the help required in due time. Right now she’s having shortness of breath. A lot of persons have expressed their concerns in helping… I’ll be forever grateful. She has a 13yr old son who also needs help,” Richardson said.
With Clarke’s death, prosecutors are likely to move the charge against her alleged attacker from attempted murder to murder.
Pedro Ashton, Clarke 33-year-old boyfriend, a labourer of Biabou was arraigned on Aug. 15 in connection with the attack on Clarke.
He was charged that on Aug. 13, 2017 at Biabou, with intent to commit murder on Monique Clarke, of Biabou, he did an act which is more than merely preparatory to the commission of the offence.
He is scheduled to reappear in court on Sept. 4.
As he was leaving the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court after his arraignment, iWitness News asked Ashton if he had in fact set Clarke afire and he responded:
“Yo’ go know. The 4th ah September. Yo’ go know the truth and nothing but the truth.”
That’s why the lady in Evesham kill the man because if when this son of ah bitch was [mess]ing around with Monique and she had [mess] him up she might have been here today but he will get [messed]in his own time.
