Former West Indies T20 player Vinentian Miles Bascombe is a new selector for the regional team.
Bascombe was named as one of the selectors to be on the selection panel for the men’s teams following a revamp of the selection system. F
ormer West Indies allrounder, Roger Harper will serve as lead selector on the panel, which also includes the head coach, Phil Simmons.
The panels were announced in a media release from Cricket West Indies (CWI), following what it said was a comprehensive recruitment process led by the CWI Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams.
Other appointments named were Ann Browne-John (Lead Selector) and Travis Dowlin on the Women’s & Girls’ panel; and Robert Haynes as the Talent ID Manager of the Boys panel.
Bascombe is the second Vincentian to be a selector at the international level.
The other is Michael Findlay, who last served in the capacity as Chairman of Selectors in 2002.
On his appointment, Bascombe said: “It’s an honor and a privilege to serve West Indies Cricket in this capacity. I plan to approach this role with utmost seriousness and professionalism.”
The former aggressive right-handed batsman toured England with the West Indies T20 team in 2011.
Bascombe has also represented Windwards Volcanoes and Combined Campuses and Colleges in 24 first-class matches and 26 List A matches.
He has served as a national selector for the St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and also Technical Advisor for Windwards Cricket.
Bascombe holds an AMaster fo Science in electronic commerce and bachelor of science in electronics with computer science, along with cricket coaching certificates.
The first task of the West Indies Men’s panel was to select the squads to tour India in November to play Afghanistan and then India.
Mr. Bascombe’s naming to the selection is comical. He’s more of a technocrat than an ex-cricketer with vast experience and knowledge of the game.
Furthermore, as Andy Roberts opined, Mr. Bascombe, should have recused himself as a candidate as he was involved in the recruitment process!!
We have lots of former WI players residing in the region, who are available and eminently more qualified than Mr. Bascombe for the position of selector. Desmond Haynes is but one of several former players who qualify.
I think really n truly that everyone deserves a chance to prove their skills n I sure Mr bascombe is ready to buss your mouth stop d fight down man
