Redroots, St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) rolled out phase 1 of its project “Education Through Grocery” in Green Hill and Diamond on April 18.

Education Through Grocery, a monthly distribution of food baskets, is an initiative of RedRoots SVG, a non-profit, non-governmental organisation geared at the empowerment of women and children in SVG.

Fifteen unemployed young mothers from Bequia, Kingstown, Owia, Green Hill, Diamond, and Chateaubelair are participating in the programme.

Redroots SVG firmly believes that “saving a woman is saving a community” and with this in mind, the project’s intent is to assist selected unemployed young mothers with monthly groceries, enrol them in skill training and provide with transportation and meal stipend to attend skill training.

At the successful completion of this project, participants will gain a certified skill that will provide them with income-earning opportunities. They will also undergo empowerment sessions (mentoring, entrepreneurship, business management) and exposure to future Redroots SVG projects.

Redroots SVG was founded in July 2018. Its vision is to advocate for, empower and support victims and survivors of sexual abuse, violence, and inequality.

Its mission is rooted in the value of healing, educating, promoting equality, justice, partnership, and trust.

As an NGO, Redroot SVG’s finances and survival depend on the support and contributions of its members and donations from local, regional and international businesses, donors, institutions and individuals.

Phylicia Alexander-Lavia, director of Redroots SVG, said she reminded the recipients that they are fortunate and that many persons in their position would love to be part of “Education through Grocery”.

Alexander-Lavia also stated that the project, although yet not funded, is intended to be a permanent feature on the organisation’s programme, and that it is not expecting any failures after the execution of the project.
