The Union Island woman who is alleged to have poured a hot liquid on another woman at an emergency shelter there after the passage of Hurricane Beryl has been freed of the charge.

Venus Porter walked out of the Serious Offences Court a free woman after her alleged victim, Vishma Browne, of Ashton, Union Island, told the court that she had no interest in pursuing the matter.

Porter had been charged on indictment that she unlawfully and maliciously caused grievous bodily harm to Browne.

Prosecutors were alleging that Porter committed the offence at an emergency shelter in the storm-ravaged southern Grenadine island.

However, when the matter came up for hearing recently, Browne told the court that she had no further interest in pursuing the case.

Asked by the prosecutor, Inspector of Police Renrick Cato if she had forgiven Porter, Browne said yes and that she had made the decision of her own free will.

Cato then asked the court to discharge Porter.

Senior Magistrate Colin John then told Porter that she was free to go and that the matter against her was discharged.

“I just want to say something to Vishma,” Porter told the magistrate, her voice appearing to break.

“Vishma, I have done you something wrong and you forgive me and thank you very much. And in front the magistrate and everybody who are here, I wish from today we can live in peace,” Porter further said.

“Amen,” Browne responded.

Porter has been granted EC$15,000 bail.
