A prominent resident of Canouan was Friday afternoon in police custody and seeking legal advice after an altercation with an investor on the island.

iWitness News understands that there was a physical confrontation between the two men, which progressed to the point that one of them allegedly drew his licensed firearm, reportedly after some residents of the island became hostile toward him.

The circumstances surrounding the altercation are not clear at this time, but iWitness News was reliably informed that the Vincentian man described the investor as “too disrespectful”.

Tension in the southern Grenadine island, marketed as the place where billionaires go to avoid millionaires, has been a fact of life on the island for over two decades.

The local population is sandwiched between multi-million tourism developments in the north and south of the 1,800 acres, two-thirds of which are in the hands of foreign investors.

Investors have been playing various roles in the recovery of the island after the devastating impact of Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024.

This is a developing story and iWitness News will bring updates accordingly.

  1. For the good of our overall national economic development, the people of Canouan, none traditionally indigenous to the island in the sense of having lived there for millennia because they are the descendants of indigenous Africans forced to go there in chains against their will, need to be located to the mainland, even if this requires a constitutional amendment.

Sounds harsh? Yes. But such an age old process continues to take place around the world in the name of the greater good for all.

    1. I disagree with your statement are you implying that Vincentian citizens should forfeit there rights vacate Canouan? Aren’t we all at some point was brought against once you are an African and a black man! American blacks, Haitians, Lucians I can go on and on . Saint Vincent, Bequia, Mustique , and all the Grenadines are one nation! Hence you are a Vincentian regardless you born on the mainland or the Grenadines. THEREFORE it’s absurd to suggest that Vincentians locally to any Grenadines should vacate to accommodate for anyone! Instead more should be done by the government of Saint Vincent to have some of the wealth and economic activities be share with our people! We need to stop blaming slavery and other colonialism nonsense for these kinds of things!

  2. Oh please. 😱 you have to be kidding me. There’s no way this none is written by a Vincentian or a caribbean national.

  3. Spell “idot” correctly so as not to be called an idiot by people like me.

Name calling, you should know, is the last refuge of fools unable to otherwise confront ideas they don’t like.

  4. Population displacement for environmental, economic, or political reasons is done around the world, including our beloved SVG where several hundred people were or are in the process of being relocated because of the building of Argyle Airport and the repurposing of the former E.T. Joshua airport, not to mention the relocation of thousands of people due to the destruction caused by the 1902 eruption of La Soufriere.

All land in blessed SVG is technically Crown land over which the government has both a right and duty to allocate and reallocate for the greater good of all Vincentians.

Relocating the people of Canouan would well serve that greater good.

  5. Whereas I kinda grasp a small point maybe a little dot of what you’re saying why are we always the ones n by “we”, I mean locals have to be the one too sacrifice everything for the greater good? Why can’t you respect the fact that you met me here n you make adequate proposals to facilitate us? Can I go too Europe as a black person n require them to move their locals just like that because I have money? Hell no! I’ll be buried in bureaucracy for the next millennium 🙄🙄. Y’all seem too think that money is everything that’s why y’all have no souls but for me everyone needs to find a more amicable solution to coexist. You don’t come to my house n disrespect me in there 🤨. You’re a guest in my land don’t disrespect me because you can flaunt more dollars than I can. Respect every man but fear no one😏! Too much does happen in the name of productivity n whilst we can’t just pick up n go to other lands n push people around I don’t know why we make it so easy for others to come here n push us around! Slavery now start🙄cause y’all trapping the minds of people that anyone who wants to invest is better than local so just move over😠. If you can’t be happy in your own home where else can you be happy? If when you come here n you meet people here you can’t make their lives totally better don’t blasted come🤨! Process dat😠

  6. I see the logic Mr. David but the examples you stayed above is not the same as the current situation. The circumstances were totally different. I don’t see how the application of the above aforementioned is a justification for vacating the island. Crown lands or not! Who does ot benefit on this relocation proposal you mentioned? Is this a viable resolution going forward? And what message are you sending to the Vincentian people?
    Roy

  7. Canouan. ben-David says:

you are an idot period. I can call you an A– hole but I don’t know hw to spell it. You have posted a lot of stupid things about Canouan over the years but this is the worst of all.

There will be space for you in canouan when the the people there is located to the mainland.
    Good Luck
