A Sandy Bay farmer is celebrating the fact that a sheep she was given four years ago has given birth to five lambs.

Annel “Babsy” Francois, who is deputy headteacher at the Sandy Bay Government School, said the sheep gave birth to four rams and one ewe on Monday.

She said it was the first time that the sheep, which is “white with very small ears — almost like bald-head”, gave birth.

The teacher said there was nothing special about the sheep but she dewormed it regularly.

Francois said she knows of sheep giving birth to up to four lambs and she feels elated about her sheep giving birth to five.

“I didn’t expect this amount,” Francois said, adding that she would continue to rear animals.

Francois said she was given the sheep after the explosive eruption of La Soufriere in 2021 and has since begun to rear goats and a cow.

The teacher said she has a passion for farming but does not plant things at home because of animals destroying them.

She, however, is in charge of the school’s garden, which includes a variety of vegetables and herbs, including sweet pepper, rosemary, chive and thyme.

Francois said last year, the school placed second in the national school’s best garden competition.
She was confident that the school would win this year.

In 2020, a cow belonging to Francois’ father, Edwin Ballantyne, gave birth to three calves at the same time.

Francois smiled as she told iWitness News that she did not know if there was something special about her father’s cow and her sheep.

She said, however, that because of age, her father has since sold those animals.
