Former president of the SVG Tennis Association Grant Connell has launched a Grassroots Tennis club in Fancy.

Connell visited the North Windward community recently and held fun sessions on the playing field with close to 50 children.

He was supported by coach Corey Huggins and Antonio Caine, who both represented the SVG National Tennis Association at different levels.

Before his event began, Connell attended a meeting of the Fancy Government School’s Parent Teachers Association to inform the community of his plans and to invite the public to become involved in the sport.

He said training sessions would be held on Saturdays at the Fancy Hard Court.

Connell said Fancy is just the beginning as they intend to extend the sport to other communities.

This would be the initial introduction of grassroots tennis to the community.

Huggins said that from his initial interaction with the children, he saw the interest, strength and hand-eye coordination, adding that there is great potential for the sport in the community.

He said he hopes to introduce pickleball at a later date.

The Fancy Government School has an active table tennis club with Nathan Abraham and Kiara Michael placing first for the boys’ and girls’ singles, respectively.

Cheston Stay and Kerry-Ann Bowens placed third for the boys’ and girls’ singles in the 2024 inter-primary schools’ table tennis tournament.

The youngest participant in the tennis activity was two years old.
