A shipment of hair products that originated in St. Vincent and the Grenadines was found to contain 47.4 pounds of cocaine in Puerto Rico.

The Virgin Island Consortium reported on Wednesday that U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted the drug on Jan. 28 at the FedEx cargo facility at Puerto Rico’s Rafael Hernandez Airport.

The cocaine, which had an estimated street value of US$361,200 (EC$972,000), was hidden inside hair conditioner jars bound for Thailand.

Customs officials flagged the shipment for further examination after a non-intrusive x-ray scan revealed anomalies among 59 hair conditioner jars in the package.

Upon conducting a physical inspection, officers discovered that 51 of the jars contained a white powder, sealed inside vacuum pouches.

A field test confirmed the substance as cocaine.
