A 40-year-old man who recorded his first conviction when he pleaded guilty to three charges avoided a two-month prison term when he paid EC$500 in fines forthwith.
Orandell Williams appeared before Magistrate Kaywana Jacobs at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to a charge that on May 10, on the Dickson public road he made use of threatening language to Victor Mc Barnette to wit, “Carry me name ah station, ah go chop yuh up wen yuh come back”.
Williams also pleaded guilty to charges that on May 10, he threw a missile, to wit a Hairoun bottle, at Victor Mc Barnette, and that he, without lawful authority, did willfully break one Hairoun bottle on the Dixon Public Road.
The prosecutor, acting Sergeant of Police Corlene Samuel, told the court that Williams and Mc Barnette were friends.
She said the men became distant after Mc Barnette told Williams not to interfere with his (Mc Barnette’s) niece.
On May 10, Mc Barnette was sitting in the public road opposite Williams’ home when Williams exited his gate with the Hairoun bottle in his hand and began cursing Mc Barnette.
Williams then threw the bottle at Mc Barnette who dodged the bottle, which shattered on the wall, causing injuries to Mc Barnette.
Williams then told Mc Barnette, “Carry me name ah station, ah go chop yuh up wen yuh come back up.”
Samuel said Williams did not give a written statement but told the investigator, Police Constable 112 Bowens, “Me pelt the bottle on the wall where the man was sitting.”
The magistrate said the defendant’s actions were unprovoked. On the threatening language charge, she fined him EC$300 to be paid by May 20 and ordered him to pay EC$200 by May 16 for throwing the bottle or spend one month in prison on each charge.
Mc Barnette was reprimanded and discharged on the third charge.
