When Hurricane Beryl devastated parts of St. Vincent and the Grenadines on July 1, 2024, it affected 40,000 people — about 40% of the nation’s population.

However, they were a fraction of the 13 million people in the Americas who were displaced by natural hazards in 2024 alone.

Natural hazards often rob the people affected of all their material possessions. These hazards also deprive their victim of something less tangible and harder to replace: their mental well-being.

However, disaster managers in the Caribbean are responding.
