Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves has echoed the Bible’s description of the coming of Christ as he told party supporters to prepare for general elections.
“The elections which are before us, I want you to listen carefully, because in the twinkling of an eye, the election trump shall sound in the same way that the Apostle Paul, servant of the Lord, he said on the final moment when the trump shall sound, the dead in Christ shall rise and those who are here will be wrapped up,” Gonsalves said on Saturday.
“But on the earth, there’s an election trump will sound and the Constitution of St. Vincent and the Grenadines accords me the right and the responsibility and the authority to advise the governor general when Parliament must be dissolved, and elections are to be called,” he said at an event where he was confirmed as the ruling Unity Labour Party’s candidate for North Central Windward in the next general election.
General elections are widely expected by November, ahead of the February 2026 constitutional deadline.
“That trump is not sounding tonight, but it shall come in the twinkling of an eye and be ready and be together in solidarity,” Gonsalves told Party supporters in Colonarie on Saturday.
He said that people consider three things when casting their ballots.
“They vote about the record of the party and the nature of the party and how it has served you. It votes on leadership and it votes on candidates,” he said, adding, “Mixed up with all of that, policies and programmes and achievements.”
He said that from his vantage point as prime minister for nearly 25 years, “you cannot elect anybody who is weak, who is lazy, and who is indecisive.
“And Friday is lazy, he’s weak and he’s indecisive; he can’t make decisions,” he said of the opposition leader, Godwin Friday.
Gonsalves noted that Friday told Parliament on July 27 that whether or not to grant Vincentian citizenship to the surviving members of the 1975 West Indies Men’s Cricket team was the most difficult and agonising political decision he has had to make.
“Imagine that! Of all the difficult decisions, that is the most difficult and agonising. When I heard him talk, I say, ‘Well, people next to him going sap him with Alcolado and Limacol and anybody who close to him going say, ‘Call the doctor to gi’ him tablet’ because he can’t sleep over to decide whether Clive Lloyd and his legend should get citizenship?
“That alone will tell you that indecisiveness makes him unfit, weak and lazy,” Gonsalves said.
The prime minister said that during his nearly 25 years in government, he has had many strong personalities in Cabinet, but none of them ever resigned nor has he fired any of them.
“The reason being, this party is organised, it’s united, and we sing from the same hymn sheet,” Gonsalves said.
“Can you imagine the disaster which will befall this country if you have a weak, indecisive and lazy man as prime minister?”
He said that Vincentians take political stability for granted.
“The political stability which you take for granted will be no more. And every Monday morning, you’ll have Cummings and Leacock fighting one another, and Bruce and Bramble and Friday, they will have so much confusion that nobody will have any time to properly look after the interest of the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines,” the prime minister said, referring to members of the opposition.
Gonsalves said there were some Labour supporters who assumed that the party had already won, while others said they are not voting “because ah did want something to fix me fascia board, but I didn’t get the fascia board fixed.
“But in the same house, all your children gone secondary school, they gone community college and they gone university,” the prime minister said.
“You got Modern Medical (Diagnostic Centre) in Georgetown, which takes of you, but you’re worried about the fascia board? The fascia board will get fixed.
“If you do not go to the polls. That’s the only way that the Labour Party will not win the election,” said Gonsalves, who is leading the ULP as it bids for a sixth consecutive term in office.
“Therefore, from today, you have to resolve that you go to the polls, and if you have any dissatisfaction, measure it against your satisfactions, and say there’s only one choice: the Unity Labour Party; one single choice to carry us forward in progress, in prosperity, in inclusiveness, inequality, insecurity and no lazy man, no indecisive man, no weak man can ever lead; never ever lead,” he said.
PM Gonsalves’ speech uses calculated rhetoric, invoking divine imagery, stoking fears of chaos, and launching personal attacks, to shore up support. His speech cheapens religious symbolism for partisan gain, It alienates voters who expect substantive debate and reveals a troubling disregard for genuine accountability. By framing the opposition as incompetent and dismissing grassroots grievances, he prioritises loyalty over responsive governance.
Ultimately, these tactics erode our democratic norms. Reducing politics to emotional manipulation and caricature, rather than policy-driven discourse. It fosters cynicism and weakens civic engagement. Ideally leadership should elevate public debate, not exploit faith and fear to maintain power.
In the twinkling of an eye, unlike the Scriptures which warns mankind to live right because when the trump sounds and the voice of the archangel is heard we should be caught up to be with the Lord, Ralph Gonsalves is not the Messiah only a power hungry, egotistical man who continues to equate himself as Jesus the Christ. On that alone, no Christian should vote for the ULP, but the tares have to grow with the wheat.
We the people have another chance before us to fix the nation’s problem of the ego maniac Ralph Gonsalves. The record is there,
1. the international airport, while a good addition for the nation costed the people more than we can afford.
2. Ralph went to Barbados for a buss-head, yet touts the health care as the best.
3. The road maintenance is the worst. When a drain in Kingstown cannot get fixed for 3 months, right by the market, and the holes in the road is costing motorist money in repairs.
4. A hospital where the equipment in constantly down and when it rains, it falls on your head.
5. GHS, I have lost count of how many years still under repairs, Bethel leaking and parents are being told to give the children toilet paper and white board markers, where are my tax dollars going? Well any decent person changes their vehicle every 4 years was the comment. Consider how many Ralph has had on the back of the people since. In office!
If the ULP wins again, I do not want to hear the cries of the people again, because at the next election you have the change to fix the problem. If a dog bites you once, the next time walk with a stick.

The more i hear Ralph speak the more i feel like my intelligence is being insulted. When you sum up the things he says, you learn nothing. Its just alot of fluff and run around.
