Opposition Senator Israel Bruce has called for South Central Windward resident Gabriel “Web” Smart, who rescued a boy who encountered difficulties at sea off San Souci on Sunday, to be honoured.

“I wish to publicly commend and recognise the courageous actions of one of our very own constituents, Gabriel ‘Web’ Smart of Long Piece, who selflessly risked his life so as to save the life of a 12-year-old boy in distress in the rough sea waters at San Souci,” Bruce said in a statement on Monday.

Bruce has been identified as the opposition New Democratic Party’s candidate for South Central Windward in the upcoming general election, widely expected to take place by November, ahead of the February 2026 constitutional deadline.

“Gabriel’s actions reflect the very best of who we are as a community — selfless, brave, and willing to help others even in the face of danger. Without hesitation, he entered turbulent waters in an effort to and did rescue a young life, demonstrating immense courage and compassion,” Bruce said.

He said Smart’s act of bravery must not and will not go unnoticed.

“I propose to recognise this young constituent for his bravery, courage, commitment and great act of humanity even if in small measures. Such recognition will not only honour Web’s bravery but also send a strong message to others that acts of selflessness and heroism are deeply valued in our society,” Bruce said.

Bruce said his thoughts and prayers are also with the 12-year-old boy and his family.

“As they endure this moment, I offer them my full support. Let us continue to uplift and celebrate our everyday heroes—people like ‘Web’—who through their actions remind us of the power of compassion, and courage in the face of adversity.”

He said the incident heralds the call for sufficient notice to be placed at beaches that are not safe for people to bathe and or socialise.

“Maybe the time has come for the passing of the ‘WEB ACT’ that forbids bathing at these beaches, which have historically threatened or taken lives,” Bruce said.

He pointed out that it was the same beach at which National footballer Othniel “Baggio” Delpeche, of Greiggs, lost his life whilst trying to save his son.

“We love you and miss you Baggio, we THANK YOU Gabriel “Web” Smart,” Bruce said.

  1. I totally agree with this sentiment, he should be recognized for saving the life of the individual who could of list his life.

  2. May God continue to watch over you Gabriel, may He send His angels to encamp around you and your family in the Mighty name of Jesus. May you be the head and not the tail, may you never beg for bread in the Mighty Name of Jesus. Lord we Thank You for this young man’s life, we Thank You Father for saving them both, may they live for and give You all the honour and Glory all the days of their lives in Jesus Mighty name. Amen
