A 15-year-old student of North Union Secondary School was still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital on Saturday, one week after he was stabbed in the head at school.

The Form 2 student went unconscious after one of his schoolmates, a 16-year-old boy, allegedly stabbed him in the head on Oct. 3.

“His recovery is going to be slow,” the injured student’s aunt, Joy Ballantyne, told iWitness News on Saturday.

She said that the student had regained consciousness, and the hospital has since moved him from the main ICU to the Paediatric ICU, where his care continued.
Ballantyne told iWitness News that her nephew has been a victim of bullying at the school.

She said that her nephew has repeatedly complained about the student who injured him, constantly accusing him of having the same condition that led to his mother’s death.

Ballantyne said that her nephew would respond by giving the other student “talks”.

She said her nephew’s great aunt, who is his guardian, had to go to the school repeatedly to deal with issues surrounding the bullying of her nephew.

“She was supposed to go there recently, but she did not get to go,” Ballantyne told iWitness News.

She said that her nephew told her that on Oct. 2, the other student threatened to stab him if he went to school the following day.

She said that her nephew and other people who witnessed the stabbing said that her nephew was in the school yard when the other student, who was coming through the gate, shouted something at him.

The other student was reportedly advancing toward her nephew while taking something from his backpack pocket.
Ballantyne said she was told that her nephew ran but the other student caught up to him and tried to stab him, but he was able to fend off the strike, even as he sustained a stab to one of his fingers.

She said her nephew ran again, but the other student pursued him, stabbing him in the head, after which her nephew fell unconscious.

A video circulated on social media showed other students holding up the injured student, his body limp and his clothes apparently bloody.

“The stab went in about five centimetres; it cracked his skull and went into his brain,” Ballantyne told iWitness News.

“He had haemorrhaging in his brain and he is in the Intensive Care Unit of Milton Cato Memorial Hospital.”

Ballantyne said the injured student appeared to be suffering from short-term memory loss, but he was not sure about his prognosis.

“He is coming along, but he is not one hundred per cent,” she told iWitness News.

She said the injured boy was still physically weak and bright lights affect his eyes.

“His recovery is very slow,” she told iWitness News.

She said that police had taken the other student into custody but later released him without charges.

On Saturday, Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for crime fighting, Trevor “Buju” Bailey told iWitness News that no charges had been laid in the matter.

He said the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions decides if or when to bring charges in such matters.
