A Redemption Sharpes resident was fined after he was found guilty of assaulting a woman with whom he had a 10-year relationship.
The fine stemmed from an altercation between carpenter Norman Seymour, 53, and Alritha Matcolm, 37, a customer service representative, also of Redemption Sharpes.
Seymour was found guilty of a charge that on March 22, at Redemption Sharpes, he assaulted Malcolm, causing actual bodily harm.
Malcolm and Seymour were in a tumultuous and abusive relationship for 10 years, with arguments often resulting from Seymour abusing Malcolm’s sons, aged 18, 16 and 13.
In 2025, the 18-year-old left home as Seymour was most aggressive towards him.
On March 20, 2026, he returned home and two days later, at about 9:55 a.m., Malcolm and Seymour began to argue over her son.
The argument got heated and Seymour held on to Malcolm’s neck while she called for help.
The 16-year-old intervened with a cutlass, injuring Seymour, resulting in his hospitalisation at the Male Surgical Ward at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital in Kingstown.
He was discharged on April 1.
The matter was reported to Police Constable 927 Patrick at the Criminal Investigation Unit (CID) in Kingstown.
The officer arrested Seymour a week later and charged him with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Senior Magistrate Tamika McKenzie sentenced Seymour to 11 months in prison, suspended for one year.
He was also fined EC$300, to be paid by July 13, or four months in prison.
Lawyer Ronald Marks represented Seymour.
A charge in which Seymour is the virtual complainant is before the court.
