Vincentians can help send a Special Olympics team to an Elite International Competition and, at the same time, come away with big winnings.
Special Olympics St. Vincent and the Grenadines is raising funds to send a team of athletes to the Special Olympics World Summer Games to be held in Los Angeles, California in 2015.
The fundraising drive begins this Saturday, March 29, with a floor hockey and bingo event at the Bank of St. Vincent and the Grenadines car park at Bedford Street.
The fun begins at 7 p.m.
Players will have a chance to win the $2,000 jackpot, sponsored by St. Vincent Brewery Ltd.
In addition to the jackpot, the game will offer great prizes and special door prizes.
The public will get the chance to see the special athletes in action as they play a game of floor hockey.
In 1997 in York, Canada, Special Olympics St. Vincent and the Grenadines won its first gold medal in floor hockey. It was a watershed year for the programme, as the coach of the team, Woodrow “Keylee” Williams, and a member of the team, Terrance Dublin-Davis, were voted Caribbean Coach of the Year and Athlete of the Year, respectively.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines Special Olympics athletes are currently training to participate in the 2015 World Games, where they will compete against other athletes from more than 170 countries in five different sporting disciplines: bocce, athletics, aquatics, football and tennis.
Bank of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Digicel St. Vincent Ltd., the group’s multiyear sponsors, have pledge their commitment to providing opportunities for the athletes, and the Special Olympics SVG says it hopes that more organisations would pledge their support so that the athletes could have the opportunity to display their potential.
Individuals can also make the athletes dream come true via direct donation to the Bank of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, account number 201065.
