Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves is slated to leave St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday for an official visit to Romania.

“… it’s really going to be hectic, because I’ll be going through London, just overnighting in London, going and do the visit in Romania and come back, seeing the Prime Minister,” he said on NBC Radio.

“You have a couple of students in Romania,” Gonsalves said, adding that CARICOM countries have not sufficiently engaged Eastern European countries, which are in the European Union.

And we have to engage them, to persuade them about things relating to us, which you get some priority inside the European Union. Some of the Western European countries which have historical relations through colonialism, whether in the Caribbean or elsewhere,” Gonsalves said.

“We have Britain when it was in the European Union, but the same thing applies there, and France and Spain and Portugal and Germany in the case of, say, some African countries. We need to do that.”

The prime minister said he is hoping that he could sign “a general cooperation agreement which would cover a wide range of things and a specific one in relation to helping with disaster preparedness and management.

“Naturally, education is going to be central in the general discussions, and we have to look for markets there, too,” Gonsalves said.

We have to look for investors there, too, in Eastern Europe and Romania has been advancing.”

He said that when he returns to SVG, he would have a day, or two at most, before leaving for Honduras for the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States on April 9.

Gonsalves said Minister of Foreign Affairs Frederick Stephenson along with SVG’s ambassador to Cuba, Ellsworth John from Cuba, will travel to Honduras ahead of him.
