The SVG Cricket Association has sent “hearty congratulations” to Vincentian Under 19 cricketer, Gidron Pope, who was part of the victorious West Indies youth team that won the 2016 ICC-World Cup in Bangladesh on the weekend.
Pope, an opening left-handed batsman, played a critical role in the regional side triumph, with some attacking stroke plays, and his handy off spin bowling. He ended the tournament with 232 runs at 38.66 and 7 wickets at 23.14.
Additionally, he has been lauded for his support to the captain and teammates.
His performance in the tournament has also earned him selection to the Under 19 World XI.
President of the SVGCA, Kishore Shallow, expressed abundant pride and joy for the youngster.
“Gidron has been around for a few years, dominating youth cricket locally and regionally. His performance at the world cup comes as no surprise to me, I am just very happy that his hard work is paying dividends for him,” Shallow said.
The president further said: “This is indeed only a stepping stone for Gidron. My expectations of him are quite high, so I trust that he will take this in strides, and continue to develop his game; test cricket must remain his ultimate aim, and we will remain supportive to him every step of the way.”
Shallow also hailed his counterpart, Dwain Gill, President of Grenada Cricket Association. “I also extend huge congratulations to Dwain and all the other guys, including young Obey McCoy who was originally with the team until he got injured, they all have represented us with excellence.”
Shallow also commented on the implication of the win for West Indies cricket.
“West Indies cricket needs all the boost possible, and this win is certainly one of those. However, I won’t get carried away with this success. There is plenty of work to be done. Notwithstanding, what we have seen over the last couple weeks is young raw talent capable of dominating world cricket. I strongly believe [that] with the right systems and infrastructure in place for our young cricketers, we will eventually return to the glory days.”
Pope is scheduled to return to St. Vincent from Bangladesh today, Wednesday, at 9:20 a.m.
