The main opposition New Democratic Party (NDP), on Wednesday, congratulated the Vincentian athletes and coaches who represented St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the CARIFTA Games over the Easter weekend.

“Their performance is truly an effort that we all should be proud of as Vincentians,” the party said in a press statement.

The team brought home three gold medals, including the nation’s first in swimming.

“The young people of our country have a lot to offer. Despite the many challenges, including the absence of proper facilities for training and competition, the team showed true resilience; they represented us with courage and pride,” the NDP said.

The party quoted its president, Leader of the Opposition, Godwin Friday, as saying, “The NDP is committed to ensuring that there is a national stadium for the young people to train and compete.”

This, he said, will make them more competitive and open opportunities for scholarships, among other things, for them.

“The NDP had made a commitment in our 2015 Manifesto to update community sporting facilities, build a national stadium and a National Indoor Sports Complex, provide sports scholarships and provide funding for national sporting associations and is committed to making these promises a reality,” the party said.
