Politician Jomo Thomas has denied abandoning South Leeward as claimed by some members of the ruling Unity Labour Party on whose behalf he contested that seat in the 2015 polls.

“That is patently untrue,” Thomas told a press conference in Kingstown on Tuesday, during which he announced his resignation from the ULP.

“In fact, the prime minister can tell you that at literally at every session of Parliament — because I have made the decision that I am not going to send people to go up to the prime minister’s office — but at literally every session of Parliament, I would have a small band of people who would approach me to say, look, I need one sort of assistance or another, to see the prime minister either before we start, when we break at lunch, when we are coming back from lunch, or when we break in the evening,” Thomas said.

At the press conference, Thomas announced his resignation as ULP caretaker for South Leeward.

He had held that designation after he lost the 2015 election by 118 votes to the incumbent, Nigel “Nature Stephenson of the main opposition New Democratic Party.

He also announced that he will resign as Speaker of the House of Assembly early in the first quarter of next year.

He told the press conference that unlike some other politicians, he does not do hype.

“To me, the best representation anyone can make is not how many times we appear on Facebook, it is not how many times we appear in the press, it is not how many times we have a picture but how we can practically impact on people’s lives,” he said.

“So when somebody comes to me and says, ‘Look, I am ill.’ I say the best person to speak to is the prime minister and that person comes and speaks to the prime minister and the prime minister gets his security to pick her up in the morning or him in the morning, take them to the Georgetown Diagnostic Centre and then gets an evaluation and that person is shipped abroad and that person gets assistance, that’s good enough for me.

“When somebody comes and says they are looking for a job and I can point them in particular way, that’s good enough for me.  When I can advocate for people and say, look, there is no reason why this community centre should be in this condition or why this road should be in this condition, that is not a complaint for me. That is a complaint for the people who are impacted and impacted negatively. So, my style is a different style. People want to flam, let them flam. I don’t do flam, I don’t do glitz.”

Told that there is something to say for kissing babies and hugging elderly people in politics, Thomas said he had nothing against that.

“There is a time for hugging and hissing.  Ecclesiastes is right, you know. There is a time for everything. There is a time for the rain and a time for the sun. There is a time for love and there is a time for war. But everything can’t be the same thing.”

  1. This is the truth: “…. but at literally every session of Parliament, I would have a small band of people who would approach me to say, look, I need one sort of assistance or another, to see the prime minister …” “… when somebody comes to me and says, ‘Look, I am ill.’ I say the best person to speak to is the prime minister and that person comes and speaks to the prime minister and the prime minister gets his security to pick her up in the morning or him in the morning, take them to the Georgetown Diagnostic Centre …”

  2. The helper of people did not get help from you know who. In my previous comment, I was at pains not to say that that was Jomo’s problem and I am not saying it now, but it is more than likely in Jomo’s craw.
