Guinness lovers hoping to enjoy the best brew in the Americas would have to travel to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
St. Vincent Brewery Ltd. has been recognised as the producers of the best Guinness in the Americas and the 16th best in the world for the year ended July 2023.
“It’s a big moment for us,” Shafia London, country manager of St. Brewery Ltd. told the media at the company plant in Campden Park, on Monday.
She said that a few months ago, the company “in a small way” celebrated preliminary results, showing that after half a year, Diageo, owner of the Guinness brand, indicated that St. Vincent Brewery’s Guinness was the number one in the Americas.
“That was the six-month result. Six months later, when we evaluate the full year results now, Guinness is the number one in the Americas made by the St. Vincent Brewery Ltd,” she said, noting that the company’s brew ranked 16th globally.
The Guinness League of Excellence provides a measure of the quality of Guinness produced around the world.
By applying a common scoring system, it facilitates the development of a league.
The expert sensory panel, brewing and governance, and brand technology innovation teams within the Operational Excellence – Beer function of Diageo Global Supply support the breweries on the ground and from Dublin to improve their performance annually.
Key parameters that affect quality from a consumer perspective are assessed, primarily what the stout looks like (in package and in glass) and its taste.
In addition to local site quality monitoring of all Guinness production, the expert sensory panel in Dublin tasted almost 500 beers and over 6,900 analyses were carried out by the Beer OpEx Analytical and Sensory Services team.
“It means that the Guinness made right here, locally, in all the parameters that the brand holders measure, we have exceeded all other breweries in the region, in North America, South America,” London said.
“To be able to do this is a great accomplishment,” she said and lauded the full team behind the production of Guinness locally.
St. Vincent Brewery also produces Guinness for export to Dominica.
“At six months, we thought that was great, we celebrated and to be able to get that for a full year, for that entire period we remain number 1 is really a tremendous accomplishment.
“At the St. Vincent Brewery Ltd., we might be small but we are mighty in the context of other breweries, given that we are able to do this,” London said.
She said the company is fully dedicated to providing the best quality products in the market, with Guinness being just one of them.
“We are honoured to have received this recognition. Our hope is that we continue to perform and produce products at this level,” the executive told the media.
“… this is not just for St. Vincent Brewery Ltd., this is actually a whole country on our shoulder — us representing and us being able to proudly say we are number 1 and that is something we don’t often get to say, I believe, as a country and for St. Vincent Brewery Ltd…”
Several Guinness variants are assessed as part of the League, including Guinness Draught, Guinness Foreign Extra Stout and Guinness Extra Stout.
For each site the league looks at the most significant volume of Guinness produced on that site.
All production is monitored, but only the major Guinness® SKU is included in the League of Excellence results. These results are indicative of the quality of all variants.
The league has a defined set of standards covering flavour, analytical results, package dress, and processes for each beer.
Congratulations!
