Sugar City Galores set the pace in a time of 26:02:04 to win the Shevern John North Windward Youth Road Relay Competition.
The group partnered with Team Athletics SVG to host the competition on Saturday.
In close pursuit was last year’s champion, Owia Police Youth Club in a time of 28.43.81, while Byera Track Stars dashed into third position in 32:27:50.
Two female teams from the Georgetown Secondary School were the only female contenders. They finished in 38.35.04 and 45:37:14.
The five teams participated in the six-leg race that began at 3 p.m., at the London Playing Field and culminated at Colly’s shop at Mt. Bentick, Georgetown.
This year’s competition was in honour of Elma Francois who was born in Overland, St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Oct. 14, 1897.
In 1919, she migrated to Trinidad and Tobago where she fought for the rights of Black and underprivileged people
Francois died in 1944 and on Oct. 14, 1987, she was declared a national heroine of Trinidad and Tobago.
John, who is a senator and caretaker of the North Windward constituency for the main opposition New Democratic Party, said she always encourages students to pursue their dreams and to use every opportunity to display their talent and skill.
She said sports is an avenue to beat poverty, noting that local athletes can reach the Olympics.
She encouraged the athletes to always give their best.
Athletes were awarded medals and cash prizes at a presentation ceremony held after the race.
