A 17-year-old Belmont youth has been remanded in custody until Wednesday when the court is expected to get an update on a girl, 13, who he is alleged to have set afire.
The teen, who cannot be identified in this report because of his age, appeared before Senior Magistrate Colin John at the Serious Offences Court on Monday.
He was read the indictable charge that on Nov. 8, at Belmont, he inflicted grievous bodily harm on the virtual complainant, a resident of Calder.
The teen, who was unrepresented, was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
The prosecutor, Inspector of Police Renrick Cato, informed the court that counsel Ronald Marks had represented that teen when police interviewed him.
Regarding bail, the prosecutor informed the court that the virtual complainant was still in the hospital.
“The allegation is burns about the body,” Cato said and informed the court of the age of the accused.
The prosecutor, however, told the court that the accused did not attend school.
He asked that the matter be adjourned to Wednesday so that the court could get an update on the virtual complainant.
Cato also asked that the accused be remanded in custody until then.
iWitness News understands that the youth is alleged to have doused the girl with a liquid then used a lighter to set her afire.
The incident is alleged to have occurred at a house where several young people are in the habit of gathering.
I can’t imagine what would make a young boy do such a thing. He don’t have a mother or sister or aunt or nieces. People don’t care anymore.
