The Rubis team, led by country representative Elroy Edwards, upheld a decade-long tradition of spreading holiday cheer in Sandy Bay and Owia.
The team distributed food baskets to the elderly, especially those with disabilities, providing relief and comfort to some of the most vulnerable members of the community on Dec. 17.
The initiative was welcomed by recipients, many of whom shared their heartfelt gratitude, a press release said.
Among them was Eddie Nero, 92, the oldest man in Owia, who is lovingly cared for by his family. He expressed his appreciation for the gesture, which brought joy to his household.
Visually impaired 82-year-old Elford Williams was especially excited, saying that no one in his household is employed and the food basket would significantly ease their burden, the press release said.
“This will really help us get through the season,” he said with a broad smile.
Ceva Baptiste, 82, who looks after her sick husband, described the support as “more than a relief”, noting how difficult it can be to care for a loved one without consistent help.
For Joyce Williams, 77, who lost her home to Hurricane Beryl, the assistance was a welcome comfort. “This is the first relief item I’ve received since then,” she shared, her voice filled with emotion.
Monica Henry, another recipient, was so thrilled she wished she could see the faces of the team members.
“I want to have you in mind when I pray to God to bless you,” she said while feeling the items in the box with gratitude.
The distribution effort was further bolstered by the help of Keeta Williams, a local school teacher, who played a key role in identifying those most in need.
She praised Rubis for their generosity, saying, “This is not just about giving; it’s about showing love and care for the community.”
Meanwhile, Edwards, Rubis country representative, reflected on the significance of the initiative.
“Generally, I believe we can all be more sensitive to the needs of our fellowmen and better neighbours to each other,” Edwards said.
“Sometimes we take too much for granted and forget to show that sense of care. This holiday season provides another wonderful opportunity for us as a company to embrace our joyous corporate responsibility of love and caring for the elderly and marginalized.”
He said it was the 10th year of the initiative.
“… the hundreds of families whose lives we have touched remain fresh in our memory.
Edwards also thanked to the Rubis team for their dedication in braving inclement weather to ensure the success of the 10th annual Rubis Food Basket Hamper distribution.
He thanked to the community workers and local residents who assisted in identifying the 50 recipients most in need.
“Rubis team’s efforts exemplify the true spirit of the season, reminding us all of the importance of compassion and generosity,” the press release stated.
