A 19-year-old resident of Owia died Sunday night when a car in which he was travelling went over an embankment in Mangrove, near Byera around 7:15 p.m.
Police have identified the deceased as Normanie Duncan, unemployed.
The accident has left three other people in hospital.
Police said their investigation revealed that a red Toyota Vitz, registration number RL868, owned by Elite Rental Services, in Richland Park, was being driven by Elrico Patterson, a 29-year-old auxiliary police officer, of Owia, when it ran off the public roadway and went over an embankment.
The district medical officer pronounced Duncan dead at the scene.
The driver and two other passengers, Raffique Hackshaw, 36, and Jovanie Phillips, 24, both of Owia, sustained various injuries and were transported to the Georgetown Hospital for medical attention.
However, due to the severity of their injuries, Patterson and Phillips were later transferred to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, in Kingstown.
Police said on Monday that Hackshaw was reportedly in stable condition but did not comment on Phillips’s condition.
They said that officers from the Criminal Records Office processed the accident scene.
The vehicle was damaged extensively and is in police custody as investigations continue.
“The RSVGPF extends condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and urges all road users to exercise caution and adhere to road safety regulations,” the statement said.
Duncan is the second teen to die in a road accident in less than two months.
