The man whose decomposing body was found at his Lowmans Windward home on Wednesday died of aspiration pneumonia, an infection caused by inhaling something other than air into the lungs.
Police said that was the conclusion of the autopsy conducted on the body of the man, Mechir Young, a 48-year-old labourer of Lowmans Windward on Friday.
“At this stage, there is no evidence to suggest foul play. Investigations remain ongoing,” police said in a press statement on Saturday.
Aspiration pneumonia is a bacterial infection in the lungs. It can happen when one inhales something other than air into one’s respiratory tract.
This can be food, liquid, saliva, stomach acid, vomit or even a small foreign object.
Young’s decomposing body was found at his home on Wednesday after police responded to a report by a resident who had detected a strong foul odour after visiting the house around 9 a.m.
Some media outlets had reported that the body appeared to have a slashed throat but police had cautioned against speculation, saying that due to the condition of the remains, they were unable to determine whether foul play was suspected, pending a post-mortem examination.
Investigators are asking anyone with information that can assist the investigation to contact their nearest police station or telephone 457-1211 or 456-1810.
All information will be treated with strict confidentiality,” police said.
