A graduate teacher with over 25 years of experience teaching English language and literature at the secondary school level in St. Vincent and the Grenadines has published a book to help students succeed at the language.
“This book has been penned out of a love for seeing students succeed generally in English A, particularly in the areas of essay, and short story writing,” Adriana S. King told iWitness News of her publication, “Let’s Write! A practical guide to essay, and story writing.”
“It is presented in a workbook style using a relaxed conversational tone, yet adhering to the mechanics of English, to help students to feel stress-free, and comfortable with the material.”
King said the workbook teaches “the serious concepts of expository, descriptive, persuasive and short story writing in a manner which encourages students and teachers to have fun while teaching, and learning takes place”.
The book has also been designed as a tool which parents can use to help their children master these writing skills.
Although it is written primarily for students aged 9 years and over, it could be used to help students of a younger age who may have a passion for writing, and the maturity to handle the material.
The material could be taught at both the upper primary and secondary levels. It could also be useful for students who have left school and are still struggling to write effectively.
“The aim of Let’s Write is to help students succeed at writing, improve their grades, inspire creativity and motivate them to enjoy writing. So, Let’s Write!”
King’s interdiction on protest-related charges has kept her out of the classroom for the past six years, during which she has been teaching online classes in English language and literature.
Both in the classroom and online, King has been able to work with children of varying academic abilities and has helped them to improve their grades satisfactorily.
King also has years of experience preparing students for the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment CPEA language arts and civics components.
At the CSEC level, she has seen impressive performance of students with 100% passes in English language, as well as a commendable success rate in English literature.
The improvement in grades of students at the lower secondary level has also been commendable, and so she has earned the trust of many parents.
King holds a Master of Arts in international affairs from Ming Chuan University in Taiwan; a Bachelor of Arts in literatures in English with communication studies from the University of the West Indies, and a Postgraduate Diploma in education — teaching of English ( Secondary Level). She has a passion for both the spoken and written word.
Kudos to Ms. King on developing this much-needed resource. I’m now wondering where copies can be purchased.

With the advent of the not so smart phone, tablet and laptop computers, the writing skills of pre teens has been deteriorating….instead of texting which is replete with shortcuts like ‘lol, cul, smh, lmao, tmrw, btw, etc.’ has reduced the need for spelling and ‘voice notes’ are increasingly replacing texting, so writing skills are constantly being diminished by youngsters who tend to look for the easiest way to communicate….. therefore “Let’s write” comes at an important juncture to reverse the waning writing skills.
