Some Union Island students will continue attending school at the temporary campus in Arnos Vale in September.
Some primary and secondary school students from the southern Grenadine island opted to attend classes in Arnos Vale a the campus that the government rehabilitated for that purpose following the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl in July 2024.
Repairs of the schools in Union Island are now substantially complete.
However, acting Prime Minister Montgomery Daniel said on NBC Radio on Wednesday that there is still in St. Vincent “a number” of Unionites whose homes have not been repaired following the category 4 hurricane.
“… they wish to stay on mainland,” Daniel said, adding, “But as I understand it, the majority of persons will return to Union Island and to have school started there.”
He said there was a meeting on Aug. 15 at the Arnos Vale campus.
“.. the report that came to me coming out of that meeting, that for those parents who are not returning to Union Island, that school will still be open to facilitate all of the children that is still here on mainland,” Daniel said.
He said the Ministry of Transport will continue to offer transport services to the students attending classes there.
“And so the logistics are now being worked out with the Ministry of Transport and Works and the Ministry of Education on these matters.”
Daniel, who is also minister of transport and works, said the repair of houses damaged by Hurricane Beryl is of general concern across the country.
