Central Kingstown MP St. Clair Leacock says he wants to be on the job as minister of national security from day one, should the New Democratic Party (NDP) win the next general election.

“And I only saying this. Because me ain’t have the prerogative to say this,” Leacock said at the opening of the party’s office in Sion Hill on Saturday.

Opposition Leader Godwin Friday has said that Leacock would be minister of national security if the NDP is victorious in the upcoming general elections.

Leacock said that the prime minister and attorney general are usually the first to be sworn in after a general election.

“I’m begging you, please swear me in as Minister of National Security,” Leacock told Friday.

“I want to be on the job from the first hour that we win because when they come and they play the arse, they gone! They gone! You understand? Swear me in, please. Swear me in.”

Leacock said the NDP takes “seriously and solemnly the pledge that we have given to you, that life gets better the day you vote for the New Democratic Party.

“I was saying that things bad, you know. And somebody tell me, don’t talk about lock them up again. Because what happened is since I go and make that statement, they’re taking things faster than before.

“So if we’re not careful, by election, nothing go left to tek. You understand? Is bare stupidness and corruption going on in the government. The money moving fast, fast, fast, fast, fast. But this New Democratic Party will bring back accountability to the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“So I wanted to make the point I wanted to make the point that this minister of national security understands that the first order of the day to improve national security is to improve your financial and economic security.

“If you have work, you have opportunity, and the family sees that they can see their headway, you are likely to live a better life and less tempted to go away from the straight and the narrow.”

Leacock said the NDP will make St. Vincent and the Grenadines a country of second chances.

He said it is not always that people are “able to hold the rope the first time, the second time or the third time.

“But you speak to us, we will work with you, because we want St. Vincent to return to a place worthy of living in.

“We are losing too many of our young men, not just to the prison, not just to crime and violence but, out of options, far too many of them now have to go abroad to make a living. And it is disrupting the lives and livelihood of parents and families all across this country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.”

Leacock said his simple assurance “is to say to you that I know, I know that we will win the next general election, and we will win it confidently.

“Correction!  Correct! Correction! Correct! Correction! Correct! Correction! We will win it bigly,” he said.

  1. Leacock well knows that our people — rich and poor alike — have fled our resource poor country since 1838, the year slavery ended.

Tens of thousands abandoned our sinking ship during James Mitchell regime; thousands more have departed since Gonsalves was first elected as Prime Minister.

Neither the NDP nor the ULP have a clue of how to either stop this mass exodus or reduce our high crime rate.

  2. NDP trying to lose this elections before it’s actually poll day? Smh…. Allyo can’t be serious about this portfolio!!!

  3. Half of being a politician is looking the part. If you get up unshaven, looking like you haven’t bathed, and then go out angry and shouting, you just won’t cut it.
