Vincentian author and educator Casynella “Nell” Cyrus, who was Miss St. Vincent and the Grenadines 2005, has released a new children’s book titled “A Girl Who Made It Through the Storm”.
The illustrated Caribbean story was inspired by the courage and strength shown by children and families across the nation in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024.
The book will be available locally at Coreas City Store in Kingstown this month.
Cyrus, who grew up in Mayreau, said the book was written to help children process fear, loss, and unexpected change through a message of hope, family support, and community resilience. The story follows a young girl named Sky as she navigates the emotional impact of a devastating storm and learns that courage can be found even in frightening moments.
All proceeds from the local sale of the book will go toward sponsoring a Vincentian student, a cause that Cyrus says is deeply important to her, a press release said.
“This book was created not only to help children feel seen and supported, but also to directly uplift a student in need. Hurricane Beryl tested us, but it also reminded us of our strength as a nation. I wanted to turn that experience into something healing and meaningful,” Cyrus said.
“A Girl Who Made It Through the Storm” features vibrant, island-inspired illustrations and emphasises Emotional healing for children, courage during difficult moments, the importance of community, the role of grandparents and family support, and rebuilding after loss
The book is ideal for children ages 3–8, school libraries, counselling spaces, and family read-aloud time, the press release said.
