My mind keeps returning to a few individuals who were prominently on display during the elections. Chevonne Stewart and Grace Walters. For example, have they since returned to their government jobs to mix once again with the very masses they previously exalted themselves over?

Were they able to swallow a slice of humble pie and engage in some honest reflection?

I hope their peers do not laugh at them but instead extend a measure of grace, tempered with understanding. As my grandmother used to say, to be wise, one must first have been foolish. Perhaps they now have some wisdom to impart.

I also observed that the once-vocal “Candy Man” has returned to moonlighting as a civil servant, now encouraging us to, “shop at Jax this Christmas”.

What lies ahead for this civil servant whose rise was based not on merit, but proximity to power? If he were paid according to his true grade, would he still be seated among those whose elbows he once rubbed?

Another of my grandmother’s sayings comes to mind: He who pays the piper calls the tune.

Then there is 705. Do the people know that the current manager sits in the chair with only a post-secondary diploma, training that falls short of an associate degree — while those she supervises possess undergraduate degrees and, in some cases, postgraduate qualifications?

One has to wonder whether this imbalance contributes to the persistent editorial errors and the steady stream of resignations since she took the helm. No capitalisation on the “Education Revolution?”

As a child, we used to think that speaking in “big diction” or “dix” made us sound educated. But Granny always said, no matter how you dress a pig in a suit, it is still a pig.

My hands itch to write about the politically appointed diplomats, but I am still learning to heed my grandmother’s advice. She tells me, leave them alone, and they will come home, tails wagging behind them.

Sincerely,

An Onlooker Through the Looking Glass

  1. If we don’t see some action in the near future on these square pegs and overpaid friends and family of the ULP, whose political biases are hindering the progress of the country, being removed then the NDP is going to lose a lot of support. We all voted for change so it should be goodbye to Gracie, farewell to Mr $40,000/month, ciao to Luta and the rest. We want to see them go, they have not done anything good for the country, only for themselves !

  2. This comment is for the author of this article. You miss a very important one of old people comment. EMPTY BARREL MAKE THE MOST NOISE. Your granny never said shit. It’s old people use to say.
