SVG Sailing Week plays a vital role in the marine tourism sector as it heads into what is considered the off-season, says Annette Mark, CEO of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority.

Speaking at the launch in Bequia on Monday, Mark said the event, and others like it, will continue to attract regional and international visitors at a time when increased activity is especially important, helping to extend the tourism season and spread economic benefits more evenly throughout the year.

“As the event expands, it will continue to generate a direct demand for a wide range of tourism services, including marine services, marinas, boat yards, accommodation, restaurants, bars, ground transport and local suppliers.

“It will continue to create meaningful economic opportunities for yacht agents, vendors, artisans, entertainers and service providers, particularly in communities across St. Vincent and Grenadines, where marine tourism is considered the cornerstone of their livelihoods.”

SVG Sailing Week was introduced in 2025 to replace the Bequia Easter Regatta, which had not been held for several years.

Mark said the sailing week plays a critical role in rebuilding confidence in the yachting sector.

“Following our recent challenges by successfully hosting a well-organised, competitive and internationally market sailing event, we send a clear signal to the global sailing community that St. Vincent and the Grenadines is open, ready, and once again, a premier sailing destination.”

She said the event also reinforces the national brand as a multi-island, authentic and sailing-friendly destination, where modern yachting co-exists seamlessly with strong maritime traditions, youth development and vibrant culture.

“By integrating Junior sailing programmes, traditional double ender racing and international yacht competitions, the SVG sailing week tells a powerful story of continuity from heritage to future, and differentiates our destination in a highly competitive tourism market,” Mark said.

This year’s activity will take place in St. Vincent, Bequia and Canouan, blending competitive racing with cultural celebration and community participation.

The week opens with the opening ceremony with junior sailing races on March 29 in St. Vincent. The activities then move to Canouan on March 30, with registration and our all-white party.

This will be followed by an international race from Canouan to Bequia, the following day, March 31, creating “a spectacular inter-island sailing showcase,” Mark said.

The action in Bequia starts on the second of April, featuring days of yacht racing, competitive and culturally-rich traditional double-ender races, continued opportunities for junior sailors to compete, learn and be recognised, and a full slate of onshore events, including prize giving, community gatherings, themed beach parties and cultural showcase.

The sailing week ends on April 6.

“This carefully created mix ensures that the SVG sailing week remains inclusive, honouring our heritage, supporting youth and attracting serious sailors and enthusiasts alike.”

The tourism executive said a defining feature of the SVG Sailing Week is the deliberate integration of youth sailing and traditional boats alongside yacht racing.

“By doing so, we are invested in the future of the sport while preserving the traditions that define our maritime identity,” Mark said, adding that junior regattas, youth recognition and traditional double ender races ensure that SVG Sailing Week remains authentically Vincentian.

She said work is underway to develop a feeder race to Antigua and Barbuda for participation in the Antigua and Barbuda Sailing Week, scheduled for the end of April.

Mark said this will further integrate SVG Sailing Week into the regional sailing circuit. T

“This initiative is expected to strengthen regional participation, increase yacht arrivals, and position St Vincent and the Grenadines as a natural stop and highlight on the Caribbean sailing calendar,” she said.
