Oftentimes, we hear employees complaining about unfairness at their workplaces. Most of the times, the issues stem from management, especially the managers abusing their power and position. It is even worst when the company is family-owned.

Employees should not dread going to work, a place where they spend most of their time trying to make ends meet. Irrational, emotionally immature “superiors” tend to take their anger or issues out on their “subordinates” making grown adults’ lives even more miserable.

To many, there may seem to be no avenue of justice when it comes to workplace bullying. You have to be in certain cliques and be in favour with the “superiors” in order to avoid being a target. Policies and disciplinary actions are thrown out of the window when these behaviours are pointed out by the affected staff.

Employees are often hit with “Do as I say, not as I do!” These workplaces have many unrealistic rules that stifle the growth of employees and the organisation just to feed management’s egos.

Shouldn’t the workplace be a place where employees enjoy doing their duties? Rather, they are given the choice of “fight or flight”. Do not even mention the so-called HR department. It is just there for aesthetics.

Even to provide adequate basic work equipment and gear, employers choose the cheaper route at the expense of the employees’ health and safety.

Employers have chosen the “dog-eat-dog” world and “if you don’t like it, you can leave” attitude. So, employees are left with no choice but to move from one place of employment to the next, just for a “peace of mind”. While others just learn how to live with it; go to work, make money, go home.

We are grateful for the trade unions that fight for our rights but what about those who are not so privileged to be a part of such unions? Who will fight for them?

It is a sad situation and employers need to do better.

A Disappointed Employee
