Sergeant of Police Dwight James proved to be the quicker draw, averting a potential threat on his life as an armed man advanced towards him as he sat in his vehicle at a gas station on Sunday, iWitness News understands.
According to information, there was a line of vehicles at the Richardson gas station in Arnos Vale and James was in that line waiting for someone.
A driver in the line kept honking their horn. A female driver broke the line and went to park her vehicle, alighting to go about her business.
iWitness News understands that James, who was dressed in plain clothes, said something but the female driver did not respond.
Shortly after, a man, seemingly angry, started walking towards James, pushing his hand in his waist.
The man said something to James in a manner suggesting he was angry.
James responded, asking him to settle himself. But the man, his hand still at his waistband, was an advancing threat.
As the man got very close, the law officer drew his weapon, halting the man.
iWitness News understands that the man had a firearm in his waist and the Drug Squad Base, located nearby, was alerted. Officers from the Narcotics Unit soon arrived on the scene to assist their colleague.
Police took the man into custody.
They have since charged Nicholas Huggins, a 46-year-old resident of Golden Vale, with possessing a Taurus revolver, serial number FR92971, without a license and possessing two rounds of .38 ammunition without a license.
Huggins was taken before the Serious Offences Court on Tuesday. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Inspector of Police Renrick Cato, did not object to bail but asked for suitable surety, reporting conditions and surrender of travel documents.
Chief Magistrate Colin John granted Huggins EC$15,000 bail with one surety.
Huggins was also ordered to report to the Calliaqua Police Station on Tuesdays and to surrender his travel documents.
The chief magistrate also ordered that stop notices be posted at all ports of entry and exit in the country.
The matter was adjourned to Tuesday, April 7, and transferred to the Calliaqua Magistrate’s Court.
