The president of the Vermont Wise and Benevolent Friendly Society has been charged with theft in connection with his self-confessed misappropriation of EC$83,000 of the cooperative’s fund.

Morris Prescott, a teacher and justice of the peace, is expected to appear at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where the charges will be read to him.

iWitness News was reliably informed that Prescott was slapped with 11 counts of theft on Thursday, after a Financial Investigations Unit probe.

Last Friday, he told a meeting of members of the society in Vermont that he had “misused and abused” EC$83,000 of the society’s funds.

He apologised for his actions and told members he would repay the money, if given time to do so.
