The U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown has announced the delivery of nearly 4,800 paediatric doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to St. Vincent and the Grenadines last Friday.
“These highly effective, life-saving vaccines can be used for children ages 5-11,” a press release said.
The donation is in addition to the 35,100 vaccines already provided to SVG by the United States and more than 70,000 vaccines donated through the COVAX facility, which the United States supports with US$4 billion in financial commitments.
Last year, the United States also supported SVG in its fight against COVID-19 through bilateral donation of vaccine doses and the donation of two field hospitals valued at over US$1.3 million.
Additionally, through USAID, the United States undertook a US$4.7 million response effort to support SVG in responding to the effects of the eruption of La Soufriere volcano.
“The United States is committed to leading the global COVID-19 response and will continue to support the health and wellbeing of the Vincentian people. We are proud to work with St. Vincent and the Grenadines to end this pandemic and return to health and prosperity,” the press release said.
The Ministry of Health said on Facebook on Sunday that getting children and teens vaccinated against COVID-19 can help keep them from getting really sick if they do get COVID-19.
“Just like adults, children and teens of all ages can get very sick from COVID-19, have both short- and long-term health problems, spread COVID-19 to others, and die from COVID-19,” the ministry said.
It said that the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is now available for children 5 years and older at a number of health centres across the country Monday to Friday 8: a.m. to 4 p.m.
