Two males, including a 16-year-old, were shot and killed while another was injured in Pole Yard, Arnos Vale on Saturday night, bringing the homicide count in St. Vincent and the Grenadines this year to 27.
The deceased have been identified as Jomarl John, a 30-year-old vendor, and Jason St. Rose, 16, both of Pole Yard.
Sylvanus Matthias, 63, was injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
iWitness News was reliably informed that the men were at a shop in the community when they were attacked.
John died inside the business place while St. Rose died a short distance away.
Outside the police cordon, some people complained that the absence of electricity in the community makes it easy for people to commit serious crimes there undetected.
Pole Yard is a squatting community outside the perimeter of the decommissioned ET Joshua Airport.
The government has refused to connect the area to the electricity grid although people have been living there for decades.
The community has been identified for relocation in light of the government’s plans to build an acute referral hospital in Arnos Vale, with the latest date for the commencement of works given as later this year.
The killings come after a two-week lull during which there were no homicides reported in the country following the passage of Hurricane Beryl, which claimed six lives on July 1.
On June 29, Ekron Edwards, a 33-year-old van driver was shot and killed as he drove a minibus in Ottley Hall.
Saturday’s shooting is the second double shooting in Pole Yard in 15 months.
Jomo Brudy aka “Top Dog”, of Edinboro, and John Dallaway, of Georgetown/Pole Yard, were shot in Pole Yard on April 10, 2023.
Dallaway survived his injuries while Brudy died in hospital the following day.

The homicide rate at the current rate will result in approximately 56 by year end easily surpassing last year total of 55 or thereabout. Many crimes are unreported , therefore ,decreasing the total homicide rate which are not reflected in the national homicide statistics.
