The Greigss man charged with murder in connection with Monday’s shooting death of another villager has been slapped with firearm and ammunition charges.
The accused, Douglas Baptiste, appeared before the Serious Offences Court on Thursday, charged that on Aug. 19, at Greiggs, he murdered Rakim Matthews, of Greiggs.
Detective Sergeant 191 David is leading the murder investigation.
Meanwhile, Baptiste was also charged that on Aug. 20, at Georgie Gutter, Belair, he had in his possession one 9mm Taurus pistol without a license issued under the Firearms Act.
He was further charged with possession of four rounds of 9mm ammunition without a licence.
Inspector Nolan Dallaway aka Grandpa is leading the firearm and ammunition investigation.
Baptiste was not required to plead to any of the charges, all of which were laid on indictment.
He has been remanded into custody until Oct. 15, for the commencement of a preliminary inquiry.
Baptiste is alleged to have shot and killed Matthews, a 27-year-old labourer, in Greiggs around 9:30 p.m. Monday.
iWitness News understands that Matthews and another man had an argument in Matthew’s yard, which was broken up by other people.
The argument is said to have continued on the public road when a man is alleged to have taken a gun from his waist and shot Matthews, who ran before collapsing behind his house shortly after.
Matthews’ death is the 28th homicide in St. Vincent and the Grenadines this year.
So sad that all these gun tothing young men killing off their own is irrational, senseless and chaotic. My question is what are the authorities going to do with securing citizens peace from these young thugs?
Time for action and less talking.
These young men are destroying the promise and beauty of the St vincent I know by a minority for lack of the better good for the majority of Vincentians.
Vincentians deserve better from their government and representatives .Time for change.
