Barbadian author, Kiran Dellimore has launched a historical fiction novel, Children of the Ocean God, which is based on actual historical events which took place during the Second Carib War in St. Vincent in 1795.
“… the story transports readers to a fascinating period in Vincentian history, to an era in which the ideals of the French Revolution, ‘liberty, equality and brotherhood’, were sweeping across the region,” a press release said.
Dellimore has a Trinidadian mother and a Vincentian father and holds a doctorate in aerospace engineering.
He tells the story from the perspectives of opposing sides in the conflict, the British and the Black Caribs (modern-day Garifuna), Children of the Ocean God, recounts the compelling yet tragic tale of the Black Caribs’ militant resistance against European hegemony.
The narrative captures the dauntless, noble fighting spirit of the Black Caribs as they desperately try to preserve their birthright as “citizens of a free nation” amid the devastation wrought by colonisation and slavery.
Children of the Ocean God brings to life an explosive fortnight during the Second Carib War, from the events leading up to the conflict until the days following its dramatic anti-climax on the summit of Dorsetshire Hill.
The story follows the tumultuous lives of several key figures in war.
There is Joseph Chatoyé the revered Black Carib paramount chief who is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to secure his people’s freedom, Governor James Seton, the conflicted colonial administrator who will stop at nothing to quell the insurrection, Captain Alexander Leith, an ambitious, Scotsman seeking to restore his family’s former prestige; and Warramou, a young, romantic, Black Carib warrior who finds himself caught in the struggle of his life as he tries to save his beloved homeland.
I’d like a copy of this book. I would also like Dr. Adrian Fraser to take a look at what’s written in this book. I will also donate a copy to the Layou library.
Let’s get some more information that can and should encourage SVG nationals to get involved.
I also want to get some access to Adrian’s SVG historical articles.
