A woman whose age was given as 79 was raped in Union Island Sunday night, iWitness News was reliably informed.

A source in the know said that the woman was so badly injured during the assault that the Coast Guard had to take her to St. Vincent for further medical attention Monday afternoon.

“The island is in fear and rage,” a resident of Union Island, which is still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Beryl, told iWitness News on Monday.

“Too many strangers on the island that are idling,” the resident further said.

The resident urged iWitness News to visit Union Island to see first-hand the situation there five months after the category 5 cyclone damaged or destroyed 90% of buildings in the Sothern Grenadines, according to government figures.

“We are becoming more and more frustrated. This can lead to long-term mental health issues,” the resident said.
