Fleas have forced students and teachers from the Girls’ High School temporary campus at Arnos Vale — yet again.
It is the latest disruption of classes at the decommissioned ET Joshua Airport, where a dog recently bit at least 10 students, one teacher and a parent on the school campus.
On Wednesday morning, the school dismissed classes for the day because of “unforeseen circumstances” and asked, via its WhatsApp group, that parents keep their daughters at home on Thursday.
One parent shared with iWitness News a WhatsApp exchange she had with her daughter beginning at 8:07 a.m. on Tuesday.
“Mommy, fleas are all over me. Get me out of this school,” the student told her mother, who inquired about the girl’s teacher.
The student responded that the mother was not there as yet.
At 10:56 a.m., the student told her mother that students had gone to the office twice to complain “and they are doing nothing”.
Then, on Wednesday, at 8:35 a.m., the student told her mother that “the entire school is infested with fleas and they are doing nothing”.
She said they were being made to stay “in the flea infested classes”.
At 9:57 a.m., the school sent a WhatsApp message, telling parents, “We would like to inform you that due to unforeseen circumstances, School will be dismissed early today.
“Please make the necessary arrangements for your daughter’s early pickup.
Please note that school will remain closed tomorrow. As such, classes will be conducted online,” the message said and offered details on the online classes.
In a commentary sent to iWitness News on Wednesday, one parent expressed her frustration with the situation, saying, “It is said that ‘every dog has its day’.
“The dogs at the GHS temporary campus have been having more than a day,” adding that Wednesday was “another victory for the dogs as the students were once again forced to evacuate the compound due to the prevalence of fleas and ticks”.
