A 25-year-old man who was so drunk that he could not remember attacking a woman twice his age has been bonded and ordered to pay her compensation.

Tyson Young pleaded guilty to a charge that on March 21, at Mt Bentick, Georgetown, he assaulted Susan Nickie, causing actual bodily harm.

Presenting the facts at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, the prosecutor, acting Sergeant of Police Corlene Samuel, said that the virtual complainant (VC) knows the defendant very well.

At about 11 p.m. on March 21, Nickie was walking along the Mt Bentick Public Road near Shyann’s shop when she met Young.

“Gimme something nah!” Young told Nickie, who did not respond and kept on walking.

Young struck Nickie to the back of the head and beat and choked her after she fell to the ground as a result of the initial blow.

Nickie eventually got away and made a report to the Georgetown Police Station.

Young didn’t give a written statement to the police but said he had met Nickie at the shop, which was closed at the time and held onto her hands but she pulled away.

“She fell to the ground and I choked her,” Young told police.

Samuel noted during the court hearing that Nickie had bruises and her face was swollen.

In mitigation, Young told the court: “Please forgive me, I promise I wouldn’t do it again!”

Young said he had gotten paid earlier in the day.

“I was intoxicated cause me drink over me limit and I can’t remember what happened. First time that ever happened to me,” he told the court.

The prosecutor said Young and rum decided to harass Nickie as the attack was unprovoked.

She asked the court to consider compensation to Nickie and to impose a fine to show the seriousness of the matter.

The magistrate ordered Young to pay compensation of EC$1,500 by May 23 to avoid a nine-month prison sentence.

Young was also bonded for a year in the sum of EC$1,000. If he breaches the bond, he must pay the sum forthwith or spend six months in prison.

“This is a second chance. Don’t drink; or drink responsibly,” the magistrate told Young.

Corporal 112 Bowens was the investigator.

  1. The Court should have banned him from drinking rum or any other alcoholic drink! People who misbehave and pose a threat to citizens when they drink should abstain from all alcoholic drinks.

  2. How is the court going to banned him. Is the police going to follow him around all the time. Alcohol will keep calling him.
