Opposition Senator Israel Bruce has honoured Long Piece resident Gabriel “Web” Smart, who rescued the boy who encountered difficulties at sea at San Souci on Sept. 21.

Bruce said Smart demonstrated courage and selflessness when he risked his life to save 14-year-old Kishon Pope, of San Souci.

The senator honoured Smart two days after proposing to do so, handing over to him on Sept. 2 a plaque and “a small cash contribution” in recognition of his heroic undertaking.

Pope, a North Union Secondary School student, who was present at the event, thanked Smart for saving his life.

He encouraged other children to be very careful at San Souci Beach.

Pope, who resides with his mother, grandmother and other family members, said he was grateful to be alive, adding that during the ordeal, he felt as if he was going to die.

Meanwhile, Smart thanked Bruce for recognising him.

He said he felt happy that he had done what he could to save Pope’s life, adding that it was not the first time he had attempted to rescue someone.

He expressed regret that he could not save Othniel Delpeche’s son, who died on the same beach a few years ago.

Smart said fright had overtaken him then.

He advised that children should be accompanied by an adult when visiting San Souci Beach, adding that people in the area might not have other options if they want to take a sea bath.

Also present at the recognition event was Danté Ashton, a grade 6 student at the Colonarie Government School, who had alerted Smart to Pope’s distress

He recalled seeing his friend falling from the rock while they were fishing at the San Souci Beach.

Ashton suffered minor injuries while helping to save Pope’s life.
