I have been reading, with great interest and varying delight, the responses to recent opinion pieces, including a few of my own. Clearly, a nerve was struck.
Let me be clear: I am neither NDP nor ULP. I am simply one of those progressive-thinking Vincentians and — whether you see this as for better or for worse — I am also a product of the so-called Education Revolution.
I am empowered and emboldened to stand fearlessly among those who ask — and will continue to ask — questions many have been afraid to ask or say aloud.
So, if some were upset before, I encourage them to keep reading. You may find enjoyment in my newfound writings, or fresh content to vex over and call me all manner of names, under your breath or boldly via comments and posts. Either way, the conversation continues. Time moves on, and a free press will always make room for other voices. Agree to disagree?
When one puts oneself forward for public office, one also submits to public scrutiny. One’s back must be broad. You ought not be vexed by what people say; after all, we are all entitled to our opinions. That, dear Editor, is precisely why I write for the opinion section of your paper.
Keep reading. It will get better.
I warned previously that my hands were itching to write about diplomats. At this point, I elect to offer an opinion on a particular consul general. Luta supported his party, demonstrated loyalty, and made his agenda clear. That does not mean he lacks concern for the Vincentian people. Quite frankly, however, what he did was reckless and foolish. Do I think he is a foolish man? No. But actions, especially public ones, have consequences.
As for the songs he sang on behalf of his party, I hope that, in addition to his diplomatic salary, he was properly compensated and taxed accordingly by NIS and Inland Revenue. In fact, I hope that anyone who sang for either party and was paid had NIS and income tax deducted. NDP and ULP alike, without fear or favour.
Furthermore, I am hearing rumblings about someone from the NDP camp with ambitions to take Luta’s position. Why? Like many others, this someone campaigned hard and now seeks a reward. But let us pause and consider this: what is wrong with working quietly in the background, collecting your reward, and carrying on? Anyone who steps into the spotlight must understand that both their genesis and their revelations will be subject to public scrutiny. That is the nature of politics. Brace yourself.
And let me be plain: if you are considering this individual as a replacement for Luta, you would be well advised to leave him exactly where he is. The people you appoint will reflect your party. How they behave, how they speak, and even how they party/fete, all reflect on you (NDP/ULP). Be warned!
I also hear — loosely, I admit — that this same hopeful has a family member eyeing the position of governor general, perhaps already promised. But is it not more rewarding to work for the Lord? Support whom you will, but there is usually a separation between Church and State. Choose ye this day whom ye shall serve. I recall hearing that often in church.
Finally, to Ms Veira, now press secretary: let us be honest, her appointment is political. With that comes responsibilities. She must represent her party and her prime minister, loudly and unapologetically. As they say, it is singing for your supper. If you cannot be vocal while others are (Candy Man did this and more … and not too bad, I must add), then powder your face and find another studio. Know what you signed up for.
I also wonder whether she can present her credentials to the public? What is good for the goose must be good for the gander.

An Observer Looking Through the Looking Glass

The author grandly declares themself “empowered and emboldened to stand fearlessly” and asks tough questions. Yet, the actual “questions” posed are not questions at all but a series of insinuations, rumours, and opinions presented as daring revelations. The piece trades more in gossip (“I am hearing rumblings…”, “I also hear – loosely, I admit…”) than in fearless inquiry. The persona feels constructed for rhetorical effect rather than demonstrated through substance.
This makes absolutely no sense. Luta has made his bed now let him sleep in it. Ms Viera appointment is political yes ; so what is wrong with that? I know mNyblije the writer is uncomfortable withbthebpreswnt government but Mr.author you will have to live with it. 14-1 is why..
{Let me be clear: I am neither NDP nor ULP}.Well well if you are a none such, just stay out of the political mix.Your looking glass seem foggy and I can imagine what your crystal ball look like.
Considering your position Luta you should of eaten the humble pie, take a seat on a small chair in the background and watch the election unfold but no you rallied for the red, now the sh*t hit the fan some ended up in your face so now you’re hoping to be kept in your current position? If you choose not to lie on the bed you made up then lie on the floor, you can’t plant cassava and reap fig smh.
