An unemployed Sandy Bay woman has to pay EC$450 in fines and compensation for injuring a fellow villager with a flask on New Year’s Day.

Antonette Nero, 23, appeared before Magistrate Kaywanna Jacobs at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to a charge that on Jan. 1, at Sandy Bay, she assaulted fellow villager Avise Woods, causing actual bodily harm.

The facts, read by Police Constable 977 Fergus are that Nero and Woods know each other very well but are not friends.

On Jan. 1, at 5:30p.m., the ladies were involved in a verbal altercation at a shop in Sandy Bay.

Woods then left the shop and sat on the side of the road when Nero approached her and threw a purple water flask which struck her on the right leg, resulting in injuries.

Nero’s lawyer Charmaine Walters asked the court for leniency and suggested that her client be placed on a bond.

Walters told the court that the bottle was meant for Woods’ son-in-law and not Woods.

The magistrate said Nero was a good candidate for rehabilitation and needed redirection.

Nero was ordered to pay compensation of EC$300 by Feb. 20 or spends three months in prison.

She was also fined EC$150 to be paid by March 6, or one month in prison.

Had the magistrate stuck to the sentencing guidelines, Nero would have served eight months in prison.

The prosecutor was Inspector of Police Corlene Samuel and PC 573 Young investigated.
