I smiled when I saw the recent appointments of the new diplomats. Initially, I did not feel the urge to write. But then one of my favourite pieces by Audre Lorde, “The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action”, came to mind. And so, here I am again.

The NDP did say they would appoint qualified and trusted individuals to these posts. Let me take a closer look.

I have no qualms with Roland “Patel” Mathews being appointed to the United States. However, Patel must go there with a clear charge. Your mission is to meet the people where they are — this is not a party scene nor a high-life excursion. One of your previous downfalls was the perception of complacency and laziness. I sincerely hope you prove those impressions wrong.

Ideisha Jackson, you are a worker! You have been in the trenches. Never have you exhausted yourself trying to outshine anyone, even those less qualified who felt the need to posture. This is indeed your time to shine. Your studies in Cuba are an added bonus in my book. I charge you to remain humble, hold fast to your faith, and carry Hairouna — loud and proud.

Mr. Brereton Horne, I do not know much about you, and I did not go digging for information either. We will simply be watching and waiting. Still, I charge you plainly: do the work!

Vynyette Frederick, you have worked hard for your party. Some may view this appointment as a reward for loyalty. Perhaps they are not entirely wrong! That said, there is no question about your qualifications or your ability to function effectively in this role. My only caution is this: do not let it get to your head. Do not become arrogant!

Kenton Chance, I saved you for last. I hope they understand that you are a loose cannon in the best sense. You do not stifle your conscience. You speak plainly, sometimes sharply, and often in a hard-hitting yet diplomatic way. There is no question about your ability to do this job well.

What I do question is the NDP’s ability to manage a man like you. As George Orwell reminds us in Animal Farm, you are no sheep, and you will not bleat quietly.

I have always gathered that Taiwan holds a special place for you, and so this appointment feels fitting. I chuckled when I recalled the past comments and speculations about a possible diplomatic role for you. These speculations you shut down swiftly. Even I thought you would not take such a post. Yet! I understand the acceptance of the Republic of China (Taiwan) assignment. With that, I charge you to continue silencing the “(‘John’) Public” narrative that diplomatic ties with Taiwan will be severed.

In closing, to all the diplomats: get on with the people’s work and do it well!

  1. It is inevitable that China will soon rightly absorb its renegade province, Taiwan, which would give Kenton Chance an even higher profile, at least if the NDP has the resolve to fulfill its long made promise to embrace the 1.4 billion population PRC before that takes place, a move that would benefit our people and economy immensely.

Conversely, if that switch in allegiance does not quickly occur, mainland China might well throw SVG under the bus, Kenton Chance being its first casualty as he is expelled from the reunified nation.

  2. Ben – China will not go at Taiwan now because it doesn’t know what Hitler001 (Trump) will do. Chine is quietly and slowly becoming the world greatest nation based on its economic outlook and plans. It has problems internally, but unlike other nations it help poor countries to build their economies with the right martial and not ammunitions to fight wars.
America is looking to start world war 3, but it doesn’t have the man power to conquer other nations. So Kenton will be safe for a few years.
I’d advice Friday to leave Canada tourist outfit in place. It has been working very hard for the island and it has the knowledge and know-how to keep and improve the visitation of tourist to the island. I was at a boat show a few days ago and there was some one lecturing folks on what SVG has to offer.
