Police in Kingstown have confirmed that they have in custody a Tortola man who swam ashore in Bequia after midnight Wednesday, saying another of his countrymen was missing at sea.

They did not release the name of the man in custody or the ne said to be missing at sea.

Commander of the Coast Guard, Brenton Cain, told I-Witness News separately on Saturday that the man told law enforcement officials on the Northern Grenadine island that he and the other man were on a yacht from Tortola to Bequia, when it capsized somewhere off Port Elizabeth.

“His report was that the other guys said that he didn’t think he could make it. So he tied a floating buoy around him,” Cain told I-Witness News.

“When we got the report that he swam ashore in Bequia, we conducted some searches up to 10 miles west and nothing was found,” the Coast Guard head further said.

He said a number of cargo vessels and yachts were in the area and an all-station alert was issued to vessels to look out for a person in the water.

Cain said that police in Kingstown have been in communications with their counterparts in Tortola as the investigation continues.
