Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves says he will insist that the Ministry of Labour carry out a survey on the condition of domestic workers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Gonsalves, speaking on Saturday, said that this category of workers is made up largely of women.

“You notice that in all the discussion about women, there is hardly any mention about domestic workers,” he said at the launch of Renewal @40.

“They are a group, they perform tremendous service for families, they become, virtually, members of families but a large number of them are exploited in one way or another, and we have to make sure that the institutional protections are there that the domestic workers, the household workers, will perform better than before in a new regime of greater respect and comfort,” he said.

I agree PM with you on this one. While we on that let me add that this group of working women who do a tremendous job are also the most vulnerable to harm and exploitation especially abuse such as rape. Am surprised you didn’t go on to mention that.

  2. Makes you ponder if an election is on the way. Obviously Gonsalves is just pandering for support (votes) here. He has no concern for the poor in this country. He has created and supports policy that guarantee mass unemployment and knows that he can still get votes by just handing our a few free houses and building materials at election time. He has been Prime Minister for over 20 years and he is only now noticing that things could be better for domestic workers? Watch, whatever policy he creates will only make things worse. He will certainly come up with a minimum wage and that will either cut the hours of these women or make them unemployed.
The Mitchell government and Gonsalves has already destroyed our economy. Aor Agricultural Workers are the highest paid in the developing world, which makes our Agricultural Product too expensive for others to afford and that is why we have lost our farming potential because other countries can grow anything we grow for a far lower cost.
It seems the prerequisite for Prime Minister is to be a financial idiot.

  3. Ralph speaks of Renewal @40 without him tackling the central issue that we Vincentians have had to endure for now on nearly twenty years, and that is if he has forgotten it, is the dictatorship of his extended family and their crony-capitalist friends as they make shipwreck of our lives through his ULP’s failed economic policies.

What nefarious characters; They espouse nothing but pseudo-socialist, Karl Marxian rhetoric’s, while at the same time enriching themselves and lord it over the rest of us. No wonder we are so poor after the forty years on our own. Capitalism has become a dirty word in SVG in place of worldwide begging. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3u4EFTwprM

What this old man needs to do is ditch his outdated philosophy on life, desist in his and his family lordship over SVG and give us back our freedom to build a fair society, free of him and his family grubby domination! https://monoskop.org/images/5/5f/Popper_Karl_The_Open_Society_and_Its_Enemies_Vols_1-2_5th_ed.pdf
