Prime Minister Ralph says he quoted the Apostle Paul on Tuesday to the National Council of his Unity Labour Party, as the country prepares for general elections, constitutionally due in February 2026.

Gonsalves, who turns 78 this year, is planning to lead the ULP in its bid for a sixth consecutive term in office, since being elected in March 2001.

He said that 453 delegates attended the ULP’s national council meeting, which was supposed to have 225 delegates, according to the party’s constitution.

“But you can’t stop [people from coming]. And we didn’t do mobilisation. You make your institutions work,” the prime minister said on NBC Radio.

“They can’t beat the Unity Labour Party. But I told the party yesterday — I want to make this point … we can’t be complacent. And if you think you are strong, be careful not to fall,” he said.

The prime minister was echoing the Apostle Paul, who warned Corinthian Christians “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”

Gonsalves said:

“I didn’t say that. I said that there but those are not my words. You’ll find them in 1 Corinthians. Paul was a wise man. If you think you’re standing strong, be careful not to fall,” Gonsalves said.

The opposition New Democratic Party is expected to be the ULP’s main challenger in the general elections.

In the 2020 vote, with Godwin Friday at the helm for the first time, the NDP wrested the popular vote, which It lost to the NDP in 1998.

However, the NDP lost the North Leeward seat, which it had wrested from the party in 2010, after losing it in 2001.

The ULP controls nine seats in the Parliament, while the other six are held by the NDP, one less than the party had between 2010 and 2020.

  1. Realist John says:

ULP will win the next election which will be six in a row and will most likely loose the North Windward seat. However, this is not a done deal for there are several potential voters who are relocated to North Windward from the Comrade constituency housing project In Overland etc. This will tilt the balance to ensure the Ulp victory in North Windward to ensure a victory of 9:6. Same thing is expected of one vote Carlos.in North Leeward. Repeat after je Six in a Row.

  2. It is the hapless NDP which has fallen flat on their face five times in a row, and destined for a number 6 pratfall when the Comrade calls for the next election at the time of his choosing.
