Police have charged two men in connection with a firearm and ammunition that they said were found in a rental car in which the men were travelling along with two goats and two sheep late Wednesday night.
In a press statement on Saturday, the Royal Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force said it continues to bolster its efforts in the relentless fight against crime.
“As part of our continued efforts, the RSVGPF has increased patrols and operations in high-risk areas to target criminal activities and ensure public safety,” the release said.
Police said that on Wednesday, about 9:50 p.m., narcotics officers on patrol in the Akers area conducted a routine stop on a rental vehicle bearing registration number RC-534.
The vehicle contained three males, one of whom fled the scene as the officers approached.
The remaining two individuals were identified as Dante John, a 20-year-old labourer, and Deo Johnson, a 30-year-old labourer, both of Redemption Sharpes.
Police said that on searching the vehicle, the officers found a .25 calibre pistol along with six rounds of ammunition.
In addition to the firearm, the officers seized EC$3,190 in cash, two ewe sheep, and two goats — one ram and one ewe.
The origins of the animals are currently under investigation and the cash was handed over to the Financial Investigations Unit for further investigations, police said.
Both men were jointly charged with possession of a firearm without a license issued under the Firearms Act and possession of ammunition without a licence issued under the said Act.
John and Johnson appeared before the Kingstown Magistrate Court on Friday and pleaded not guilty.
Johnson was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison until Monday.
John was granted EC$10,000 bail with one surety and placed on a 9 p.m. 5 a.m. curfew. He was also ordered to report to the Central Police Station every Tuesday and Thursday between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m.
“The RSVGPF is committed to maintaining vigilance in our communities and will continue to pursue those involved in criminal activity to ensure that Vincentians can live in a safe and secure environment,” a press release said.
“We ask the public to remain alert and to report any suspicious activity to the RSVGPF. Together, we can continue to make a difference in the fight against crime,” the release further stated.
Good job getting illegal guns off the streets.
In my opinion, I think the owners of these rental sevices should investigate these customers before renting. They should ensure they have licences and a police record. This should be mandatory.
. And who are the buyers of these animals?
Young and stupid are characteristic of these youth. You have your whole life in front of you then you choose to get a criminal record in your youth. When you get older and you see you life is not what you though it would be then you would be forced to think and use your head.
