When Hurricane Beryl impacted Mayreau on July 1, 2024, it left a breach at Salt Whistle Bay, which the government quickly fixed.
However, another rift is opening up and involves a former government minister.
This time, the issue is the use of beachfront lands.
Kenton Chance reports…
As a lawyer in this country, Mr. Browne must be well aware that, like all other beaches in the country, the beach at Salt Whistle Bay and the land contained within the “Queen’s Chain” of the high water mark is not now and has never been owned by the Eustace Family nor the Grace Eustace Foundation. Therefore he, as a representative of the foundation, has no right to regulate or “regularize” what happens there. Therefore, I find his comments disingenuous at best. Is willful destruction of others’ property not a crime in this country, Mr. Browne?
Kenton, I have to commend you on the powerful images you showed in this documentary of sorts. The image of the ninety year old man and other elderly talking about their struggles is a very powerful one. It puts your paper in the realm of pure objectivity and raw Journalism, when you or somebody else isn’t making the narrative but the people who are experiencing the pain gets a turn to actually say their part. It’s a losing battle of course, but it will make a good documentary film.
